Embodied programming with visual and tangible representations

چکیده
In this paper, we discuss how meaning-making and knowledge in a particular area depends upon the representations used for expression and interaction. Based on a number of empirical examples, we discuss how new forms of representing computer programs turns the activity of programming from a mental to a largely embodied activity. With this follows that what it means to program, and to learn programming, becomes essentially different as the representational form changes. Thus, the different forms of representations implies not only different activities, but in effect also differences in the content and meaning-making of the activity at large. We argue that concrete representations should not be seen as ways of simplifying learning of particular concepts, but must instead be understood as redefinitions or alternative definitions of the concepts themselves.

A Design Theme for Tangible Interaction: Embodied Facilitation
This paper presents parts of a design framework for collaboratively used tangible interaction systems, focusing on the theme of Embodied Facilitation. Systems can be interpreted as spaces/structures to act and move in, facilitating some movements and hindering others. Thus they shape the ways we collaborate, induce collaboration or make us refrain from it. Tangible interaction systems provide v...
متن کاملA Design Framework for Designing Tangible Interaction for Collaborative Use
This paper describes a framework (under progress) for designing tangible interaction for collaborative use. Four design aspects/themes should be carefully exploited, if one wants to design a tangible interaction system intended for collaborative use: space and spaciality, tangible manipulation, embodied facilitation and representations and their expressiveness.
متن کاملEmbodied Human-Data Interaction
We propose the concept of human-data interaction (HDI) as the human manipulation, analysis, and sensemaking of large, unstructured, and complex datasets. We then proceed to suggest an embodied approach to HDI to build physical reasoning environments for these difficult and polymorphic tasks. We illustrate our approach with two examples: tangible lenses for visual exploration, and an educational...
متن کاملEmerging frameworks for tangible user interfaces
We present steps towards a conceptual framework for tangible user interfaces. We introduce the MCRpd interaction model for tangible interfaces, which relates the role of physical and digital representations, physical control, and underlying digital models. This model serves as a foundation for identifying and discussing several key characteristics of tangible user interfaces. We identify a numb...
متن کاملThe Memory of a Tree ; an Interactive Visual Storytelling Installation
Over the centuries, people have combined fields, leading to the creation of new domains. For example, artists have used technology to widen the range of their medium to express ideas in new ways. Similarly, technology has leveraged art to expand its range of application. Both art and technology continue to inspire innovation in each other. A contemporary example of this process is evident in th...
